Getting started, the hardest thing to do?

Sometimes the greatest challenge is to actually begin: there is something deep in us that conspires with what wants to remain within safe boundaries and stay the same. Years ago my neighbor here set out to build his new home. He had just stripped the sod off the field to begin digging out the foundation when an old man from the village happened to come by. He blessed the work and said, "You have the worst of it behind you now." My neighbor laughed and said, "But I have only just begun." The old man said, "That's what I mean. You have begun; and to make a real beginning is the most difficult act."

There is an old Irish proberb that says, "Tus maith leath na hoibre -- a good beginning is half the work." There seems to be wisdom here, when one considers all the considerations, hesitation, and uncertainty that can claim our hearts for such a long time before the actual act of beginning happens.

What is Scientific Prayer?

Scientific prayer or spiritual treatment is really the lifting of your consciousness above the level where you have met your problem. If only you can rise high enough in thought, the problem will solve itself. That is really the only problem you have-- to rise in consciousness. The more “difficult” which means more deeply rooted in your thought, is the problem concerned, the higher you will have to rise. What is called a small trouble will yield to a slight rise in consciousness. What is called a serious difficulty will require a relatively higher rise. What is called a terrible danger or hopeless problem, will require a considerable rise in consciousness to overcome it, but that is the only difference.

Do not waste time trying to straighten out your own or other people's problems by manipulating thought, that gets you nowhere, but raise your consciousness, and the action of God will do the rest.

Jesus healed sick people and reformed many sinners by raising his consciousness above the picture they presented. He controlled the winds and the waves in the same way. He raised the dead because he was able to get as high in consciousness as is necessary to do this.

To raise your consciousness you must positively withdraw your attention from the picture for the time being (The Golden Key) and then concentrate gently upon spiritual truth. You may do this by reading the Bible or any spiritual book that appeals to you, by going over any hymn or poem that helps you in this way, or by the use of one or more affirmations. Just as you like.

I know many people have secured the necessary elevation of consciousness by browsing at random through the Bible. A man I know was saved in a terrible shipwreck by quietly reading the 91st Psalm. Another man healed himself of a supposedly hopeless disease by working on the one affirmation, “God is love," until he was able to realize something of what that greatest of all statements must really mean.

If you work with affirmations, be careful not to get tense; but there is no reason why you should not employ all these methods in turn, and also any others that you can think of. Sometimes a talk with a spiritual person gives you just the lift that you need. It matters not how you rise so long as you do rise.

[excerpt from A Practical Guide to Prosperous Living]

A widow approached the prophet Elisha with the problem that she had bills she could not pay and debtors who were threatening to take her two children into slavery. Elisha asked the woman what she had in her house, and she said she had nothing except a single jar of oil. He instructed her to go out and borrow from her neighbors as many empty vessels as she could. He told her to take the empty vessels into her house, shut herself and her children inside, and then begin pouring the oil into the vessels. When one was full, another was to be brought until she ran out of empty vessels. She followed these instructions, pouring oil until the last vessel was filled. When she reported to Elisha what had happened, he told her to go and sell the oil, pay her debts, and live off the remaining money.[1]

Do you Realize it?

What does realization mean? When we realize something, what takes place?

Our prayers often follow a pattern of words, we say prayers that we have learned, we repeat words that are dear and familiar to us. But too many times we do not realize the meaning of the words we are repeating; they are not living words to us.

To realize is to conceive vividly as real. The prayer that changes us, that changes our life is the prayer that goes beyond the repetition of words, beyond thinking about God or Truth to the realization of what the words of prayer represent. It is to go beyond thinking or talking about God and life and love and power to the realization of God as life, as love, as power.

To realize the truth is to KNOW ourselves as spiritual beings. It is to KNOW ourselves as one with God. It is to realize, as Jesus realized, that we and the Father, the Source of all, are not separate, but one.

Realization is the result, the product of prayer. We may seem to pray. We may seem to pray and pray without results, but every word of Truth we speak, every affirmation of God's presence and power has its impact on us and works in us to heighten our  awareness, to bring us to the place where we go beyond the words of the prayer or the affirmation to the to the clear, vivid realization.

Prayer is not something that ends with the spoken word, but something that begins with the spoken word to act in us and through us. The realization of the spiritual idea is the birth of the accomplished reality. This is how our good is brought into concrete expression.

As you pray, seek always for a free clear, vivid realization of the Truth that stands behind your words of prayer. Then will the living word become real to you; then will your prayers become filled with power to produce good and perfect results.

With the December 21, 2012 end of the Mayan calendar rapidly approaching, I thought it would be appropriate to share some thoughts on this and other end of world/end of age scenarios that have persisted through the ages.

It is my firm belief that the hope many carry for a coming messiah, whether it be in the form of a person, a shift in human consciousness, a change in planetary alignments, or some type of divine intervention, stems from a simple lack of spiritual understanding. For thousands of years people have been reporting the mystical experience, an indicator that all the elements that make up this experience have been present since the dawn of recorded history. We can safely assume this has been going on long before people began writing about it. If we think of humankind and the changes that have occurred since we began recording our history, we find that nothing about the mystical experience and the way it is reported has changed. Language has changed, the metaphors used to describe the mystical experience have changed, but the experience itself has not. The faculty of mind needed to experience our spiritual source are now in place and have always been in place. Likewise, the presence of God is here in its fullness, has always been here in its fullness, and will always be here in its fullness.........Read more here
