The Widow’s Oil
July 21, 2013
[excerpt from A Practical Guide to Prosperous Living]
A widow approached the prophet Elisha with the problem that she had bills she could not pay and debtors who were threatening to take her two children into slavery. Elisha asked the woman what she had in her house, and she said she had nothing except a single jar of oil. He instructed her to go out and borrow from her neighbors as many empty vessels as she could. He told her to take the empty vessels into her house, shut herself and her children inside, and then begin pouring the oil into the vessels. When one was full, another was to be brought until she ran out of empty vessels. She followed these instructions, pouring oil until the last vessel was filled. When she reported to Elisha what had happened, he told her to go and sell the oil, pay her debts, and live off the remaining money.[1]
Using this powerful illustration from the Old Testament, let’s take a closer look at each of these steps. Read moreThursday, June 20, 2013
Do you Realize it?
What does realization mean? When we realize something, what takes place?
Our prayers often follow a pattern of words, we say prayers that we have learned, we repeat words that are dear and familiar to us. But too many times we do not realize the meaning of the words we are repeating; they are not living words to us.
To realize is to conceive vividly as real. The prayer that changes us, that changes our life is the prayer that goes beyond the repetition of words, beyond thinking about God or Truth to the realization of what the words of prayer represent. It is to go beyond thinking or talking about God and life and love and power to the realization of God as life, as love, as power.
To realize the truth is to KNOW ourselves as spiritual beings. It is to KNOW ourselves as one with God. It is to realize, as Jesus realized, that we and the Father, the Source of all, are not separate, but one.
Realization is the result, the product of prayer. We may seem to pray. We may seem to pray and pray without results, but every word of Truth we speak, every affirmation of God's presence and power has its impact on us and works in us to heighten our awareness, to bring us to the place where we go beyond the words of the prayer or the affirmation to the to the clear, vivid realization.
Prayer is not something that ends with the spoken word, but something that begins with the spoken word to act in us and through us. The realization of the spiritual idea is the birth of the accomplished reality. This is how our good is brought into concrete expression.
As you pray, seek always for a free clear, vivid realization of the Truth that stands behind your words of prayer. Then will the living word become real to you; then will your prayers become filled with power to produce good and perfect results.

We are One
"As we expand from the narrow viewpoint that the priorities in life are material and sensory wealth, to a greater view of life with spiritual purpose, then not only do we change in lifestyle habits and relationships, but we see the world differently. If we no longer think we were dropped somehow by accident onto this planet to get all we can, then we see that is also true of all other people. If we are here for a greater purpose, then so are all five billion plus inhabitants of the planet. Our sense of community changes. Our family grows. We realize we are part of a global community, all brothers and sisters on a long journey, though on different paths. No longer can we do work that might harm other people, or harm the world in which we all live. If we have jobs that pollute the environment, or create difficulties for other people, we will feel obliged to find other work.
At the same time we no longer feel threatened by the differences in other people. If all five billion people on the planet are here for a higher spiritual purpose, then the differences in race, color, and beliefs are ultimately superficial. These differences, along with everything else happening on the planet, are serving the higher spiritual purpose. Race, color, and creed are part of the different paths toward the same goal. The fear that these varieties of race, color, and creed once held, that somehow people who were different were a threat to what is owned, disappear." - Swami Rama in Sacred Journey

With the December 21, 2012 end of the Mayan calendar rapidly approaching, I thought it would be appropriate to share some thoughts on this and other end of world/end of age scenarios that have persisted through the ages.
It is my firm belief that the hope many carry for a coming messiah, whether it be in the form of a person, a shift in human consciousness, a change in planetary alignments, or some type of divine intervention, stems from a simple lack of spiritual understanding. For thousands of years people have been reporting the mystical experience, an indicator that all the elements that make up this experience have been present since the dawn of recorded history. We can safely assume this has been going on long before people began writing about it. If we think of humankind and the changes that have occurred since we began recording our history, we find that nothing about the mystical experience and the way it is reported has changed. Language has changed, the metaphors used to describe the mystical experience have changed, but the experience itself has not. The faculty of mind needed to experience our spiritual source are now in place and have always been in place. Likewise, the presence of God is here in its fullness, has always been here in its fullness, and will always be here in its fullness.........Read more here

The Heart of Religion
Fr. Alberto Luna, former Roman Catholic archbishop of Cuenca, Ecuador, calls for a sincere turning toward the "true and authentic" God, who resides deep in the human heart.
Fr. Alberto says that that sacred depth is available to everyone; it is the place where all religions meet, and it provides the strength needed to walk the path of relationship and to put "we" above "you" and "I."
Alberto Luna served as Archbishop of Cuenca from 1981 - 2000 during which time he attracted controversy among the church establishment and ruling class for both his ideas and his work with the poor and underprivileged. His personal journey into the mystical dimension of religious life has inspired many around him to embrace a more inclusive view of their faith. He continues to lead mass daily at the Catedral de la Inmaculada in Cuenca, Ecuador.

The Saving Christ Consciousness
In 1931 Charles Fillmore delivered a lesson titled. The Saving Christ Consciousness.
Here is a quote from the lesson.
"Live, as Jesus lived, in Spirit and in Truth.
Make that close contact with infinite mind,
and you will find that infinite mind will respond to your every thought,
and you will realize more and more that
you are the image and likeness of God."

A Lenten Prayer
A lenten prayer
William Arthur Ward (1921-1994)
Fast from judging others; feast on the Christ indwelling in them.
Fast from emphasis on differences; feast on the unity of all life.
Fast from apparent darkness; feast on the reality of light.
Fast from words that pollute; feast on phrases that purify.
Fast from discontent; feast on gratitude.
Fast from anger; feast on patience.
Fast from pessimism; feast on optimism.
Fast from worry; feast on trust.
Fast from complaining; feast on appreciation.
Fast from negatives; feast on affirmatives.
Fast from unrelenting pressures; feast on unceasing prayer.
Fast from hostility; feast on nonviolence.
Fast from bitterness; feast on forgiveness.
Fast from self-concern; feast on compassion for others.
Fast from personal anxiety; feast on eternal truth.
Fast from discouragement; feast on hope.
Fast from facts that depress; feast on truths that uplift.
Fast from lethargy; feast on enthusiasm.
Fast from suspicion; feast on truth.
Fast from thoughts that weaken; feast on promises that inspire.
Fast from idle gossip; feast on purposeful silence.
Gentle God, during this season of fasting and feasting, gift us with your presence
so we can be a gift to others in carrying out your work.
Amen.

Three Stages of Spiritual Practice
Three Stages of Spiritual Practice
Stage 1 Preparatory Stage. The student thinks that she is practicing, but actually she is preparing herself for the practice. Her practice consists of collecting the necessary means and resources to begin and to stay on the path.
Stage 2:Intermediate stage: A student is fully equipped with all the resources he needs to practice. His time and energy are not involved in collecting means and learning methods, rather he spends his time in practice.
Stage 3 - achievement: At this stage, a student experiences the Truth. She may have only a momentary glimpse of the Truth, but at least it is a direct experience, which helps her understand the greatness of the Truth. Now, her practice consists of trying to maintain that state. As her practice matures, she becomes an adept; then she need not try, for the experience of Unity is maintained effortlessly and spontaneously.

The Four Gratitudes
As we celebrate thanksgiving we remember & give thanks to all who have contributed to our lives.
In Aikido we are reminded of this daily. In our training we consider the principle of the Four Gratitudes.
Gratitude toward:
I. The Universe/Divine-the source of all life.
II. Our Ancestors & Parents who are responsible for our existence.
III. Nature which provides daily sustenance.
IV. Other human beings who help us in our daily lives as contributors to our society.
Thanks to all who have contributed to my life.

Unity of Gulf Breeze Prayer Request
Please join us in prayer for Unity of Gulf Breeze:
Unity of Gulf Breeze is a family size church located on the road between Pensacola and Pensacola Beach. Yesterday the oil landed on our beautiful white beaches, there is no swimming allowed now due to the oil and other toxins that have washed in. While we are affirming a solution, we are experiencing first hand the loss of the lives of so many beautiful creatures . We need your prayer support. I am asking that you send written prayers to us words from your hands and heart are very powerful. We will post them on the walls of the church to lift us up. Many of us have completed the training to qualify as volunteers and are on standby. See us empowered by faith not constricted by fear. Help us with this process. We know the church walls will be filled soon. We will provide meditation and prayer services and recreational activities for the community. There are many church communities impacted by this event we affirm we are all surrounded by love and strength.

Vesak (Buddha Day) – Buddhist
Vesak – also spelled Wesak - (pronounced way-sak) has come to be known as Buddha day. Vesak, which is named for the month of May, is generally acknowledged as the most important holiday of the Buddhist year.
In many ways similar to Christmas in the Christian faith, Vesak is a celebration that commemorates the Buddha’s birth. Additionally, in the United States Vesak has become an occasion for a common celebration to unite all Buddhist traditions and schools: Asian and non-Asian, immigrant and convert, Theravadin and Mahayana.
This year a majority of Buddhists will celebrate Vesak on May 9th; however, in any given year the exact date of Vesak varies according to the differing lunar calendars used in the various traditions.
Vesak day is a time to honor the Buddha, the Dharma (his teachings) and the Sangha (his disciples) . . . and to rededicate one’s self to the Buddha’s teachings and to practice.
Much as there is no one universal way in which Christmas is celebrated, the ways in which Buddhist’s celebrate Vesak vary widely. In most cultures, devotees are directed to make a special effort to avoid killing of any kind and to partake of only vegetarian food. Additionally, simple gifts are often exchanged on Vesak day . . . and gifts to the disadvantaged are particularly encouraged. Visits are often made to orphanages, homeless shelters, soup kitchens, blood banks, and other places of need.
While not necessarily universal, here are a couple of practices which we found particularly engaging:
In some traditions thousands of birds, insects and animals are released in a “symbolic act of liberation” – giving freedom to those being held in prisons or otherwise being held captive against their will.
Some temples display a small statue of the baby Buddha in a basin which is decorated with flowers and filled with water. In what serves as both a reenactment of the events following the Buddha’s birth and as a symbolic personal cleansing of bad karma, practitioners pour water over the statue.
Traditional Greeting: Happy Vesak! Happy Buddha Day!
Adherents.com places the number of Buddhists at 376 million and ranks Buddhism sixth, based on number of adherents, among the world’s religions.
On Vesak day, all Buddhists are reminded to live in harmony with people of other faiths and to respect the beliefs of other people as the Buddha had taught. On this, the most important celebration of the Buddhist year, we suggest that we each join with our Buddhist brothers and sisters in reminding ourselves to live in harmony with, and to respect those, whose beliefs differ from our own.

Unity Teacher & Healer.
Charles Fillmore wrote that it was his desire to have students develop into Unity teachers and healers so that they may minister to their own families and to those in their communities.
In this month dedicated to love what better way to express our being as Unity Teachers than to be healers in our families and communities.

Divine energy enlivens my mind and body.
I am refreshed and renewed.
My body and mind are filled to overflowing with healing energy. I am a true reflection of the divine rejuvenation that is continually taking place within me.
Invigorated!
That's how I feel. I'm enthused with a renewed sense of exuberance and strength.
Refreshed, I am aware that divine energy is flowing to and from every cell, organ, and part of my being.
As an expression of unlimited life and wellness, I affirm that divine life and love are active within me. I celebrate and delight in my health and renewal. Vibrating with effervescent life, my cells function in wondrous ways to reflect my wellness. Thankful for the abundance of God's love and caring, I am vitally alive, energetic, and enthusiastic.
"With you is the fountain of life; in your light we see light."
